SciTech Innovation District Strategic Plan at The Ohio State University

Columbus, Ohio

Recognizing a need to remain competitive and evolve with trends in higher learning and shifts in the global economy, the SciTech Science and Technology Campus Corporation (SciTech) at The Ohio State University produced a strategic plan in 2015 to find ways to translate this considerable infusion of knowledge and revenue into greater mutual prosperity for the university and city.  SciTech is ideally suited to drive the implementation of a new Innovation District as an established, independent University affiliate.  The 11-month planning process involved SciTech, University, and local and regional economic development stakeholders.

Our Approach

OSU and other Columbus interests hired the team of MKSK from Columbus and Development Strategies to prepare a pre-development Campus Strategic Plan for SciTech.  Development Strategies helped identify and frame a strategic opportunity to create a mixed-use place in which innovators, entrepreneurs, and designers could co-mingle to better identify, market, and monetize the many innovations and ideas that are produced as part of Ohio State’s vast research network.  Further opportunities were identified to better leverage Columbus’s emerging creative, tech, and start-up culture.

Development Strategies supported MKSK with a location strategy for a variety of land uses, devised a physical plan, evaluated case study innovation districts, identified complementary tenants, and evaluated existing and potential powers and tools to implement the plan.
